Museum of Modern Art Modern Art was truly radical back then, because it represented a new way of thinking. Society was changing and reacting in favor of the French Revolution. Hence, individuals were refusing to believe in church and monarchy. It is interesting how in times of crisis art flourished immensely. Also, It seems like art and History are two subjects that are meant to be taught together. Art influenced society and vice versa. Other period of art that was considered “radical” is Post-modernism with the use of new technologies and media to spread art. Personally I prefer modernism because this style stands for something and Post-modernism seems to question everything just for the fact to questioning. Society can consider all art is avant-garde, but not really. Art is whatever you can do with your hands to express an emotion or feeling and it can lack of spirit of rebellion. Most of the important pieces of art are well- known because they challenge society and go against the common way of thinking. Creative artist prefer to break the rules instead of please everybody, just like Galileo Galilei, who is an artist and physics is his art. Hence, we can conclude that only good art is avant-garde. All artistic movements can be considered radical. Post-modernism is an antithesis of Modernism. His nihilistic thinking made it hard to gain followers. However, is not any other art movement radical? As time goes on we get use to see as normal something that years before was considered uncommon. I believe that if you want to leave a mark in any field you have to go against rules, as Post-Post-Modernism did. While Modernism supported the identity of the “self” and post-Modernism stranded for nothing, Post-Post Modernism stands for those who don’t have a voice. It seems that we had to go through several art movements to end realizing our necessity of helping others. |
