Museum of Frenc Cinema

Which kind of characteristics made something art? Art is used to express emotions and feelings; hence we can conclude art is anything used to express ourselves in a deeper way. An example could be cinematography. Though images in movement this media shares stories with the audience and provokes. In consequence, we can define art as something provocative. For good or bad cinematography evolve in parallel with society, making difficult to us whether if cinema is based in the actual society or vice versa.

We did not visit the Museum of French Cinema; instead I watched Entre les murs by Bertrand Cantet. If we compare Mexican, American and French movies it is more likely to find similarities between Mexican and French movies. Both countries tend to display important issues as a portrait of our society. It is not new to find Mexican movies where the main characters show their crude reality. Hence, compared to American films Mexican movies tend to criticize society and have a purpose beyond entertainment.

The ancestor of the cinematography is the photography. We cannot forget that a movie is a series of pictures in movement. As Bazin suggest “photography is the most important event in the history of plastic arts” in the sense that if you want realism a picture is the easiest way to get it. I agree but like in any other art the artists can mold objects to make them look as reality. However, if photography portraits reality now painters can relay in imagination rather in reality.

Charlie Chaplin’s movie Modern Times shows how cinematography as any other art can criticize any subject. However, the important issue is that this film defies technology using technology. The first images are about industrialization using an assembly line as an icon.
