Rodin Museum

The word father means: someone who gives life. Rodin is the father of modern culture because he created the illusion that sculptures were alive. During the classical period the sculptures were about motionless beauty and then Rodin projected life and movement to his art. Immaculate gods and goddesses were not loyal anymore to how society was about to behave.

Most of the sculptures reveal Rodin as a romantic artist. The corporal expression in his sculptures Adam and Eve show fear, shame and loneliness. It seems like Rodin used to meditate about loneliness, meditation and theological issues. The thinker, a sculpture that provokes to think, looks like Rodin was expressing his emotions about meditation.

An easy way to highlight Rodin’s art is to compare it with paintings viewed at the Louvre. First of all, the advantage of sculpture is that you can see the piece of art in a 360 degree angle, while paintings are static, however some paintings at the Louvre are also Romantic artwork .A famous example is Delacroix’s “Liberty, Leading the people” this portrait summarizes the French revolution showing in the faces of the people the anger and wiliness for liberty. The naked chest of the woman symbolizes that she was feeding society with feelings of freedom.

My Rodin’s favorite sculpture is “The Hand of God”. The artist sculpted God’s hand which at the same time is creating the human species.  If we analyze his art deeply we can conclude that Rodin or any artist has the power to recreate God as he pleases, hence God depended on humans to be represented. Today, society tends to represent God as a young and caucasian man, but in reality we do not know how he looks like. In consequence we created God as our image and not vice versa.
