Sacre-Coeur

This church in the top of the hill represents the willing of church of being worshiped by society. If we imagine the scenario after the French revolution we can conclude that French society was kind of upset against the church. The catholic religion had the obligation to make a statement to renovate his power. The mosaic in the interior of the church shows all the people worshiping God and in the other side a Pope as a link with God.

A fact that surprised me was the figure of Joan of Arc before the basilica. Why the church would like to promote the image of a woman? I think church did it to restore their actions against her. I know I am making a strong critic against this church but for me it seems and hypocrite but well-played marketing strategy to regain devotees.

In consequence, the church is being influenced by the desires of the population and realizing that they are also a company. Today religion has become so commercialized. For example, many churches has some altars and candles that you have to buy in order to place them in the altar.

Additionally, Montmartre was a place to get influenced by artists. Out casted artists demonstrated that art is not defined by upper society or experts. The fact that they were loyal to their art made them interesting. Places like Mouling Rouge or Le chat Noir were a display for their art. Today in the Place du Tertre, different artist demonstrate that they do not need a fancy gallery to make art.  The word bohemian has different meanings, but certainly can be related with gypsies, which have the characteristic of move from place to place without depending on anyone. The same thing occurs with bohemians and artist, the can create art without needing the support of a luxury gallery or an aristocrat sponsor.

If money would not be important for church they would act as those artists did. In contrast, church is separating more and more from the original idea of worshiping God.
